Mobilize Human Energy

 In Blog

Gary Hamel wrote in an article entitled “Moon Shots for Management” Harvard Business Review 2/2009: “As an emotional catalyst, wealth maximization lacks the power to fully mobilize human energies‚¬Â¦ For these reasons, tomorrow’s management practices must focus on the achievement of socially significant and noble goals.”

So true!

Without a greater purpose you cannot get the zest and passion from and for people.  As leaders, it is our job to relate our team’s efforts to something bigger and better.

It is hard to believe that management experts have been writing about this topic for years yet we often forget to do this. Dale Carnegie in his book “How to Win Friends and Influence People” (originally published in 1936) wrote as one of his key principles for success: “Appeal to the nobler motives”.

We can do this!

I was at a conference where the key note speaker, Tim Sanders, talked about progressive hiring and retention practices. He says the more and more companies are looking at social skills as being more important than strong core competencies. They believe that candidates needs to demonstrate that they can get along with others or their companies fail. What a paradigm shift…and long overdue.

Can you tell me more about what he meant by “social skills”?
