Love what you do!

Creative SmallI certainly got that message from my mom growing up and it is certainly the mantra of younger generations.  It is a wake up call to organizations.  To engage team members is to increase their happiness and fulfillment at work and that turns into profits.  30% of employees in America feel engaged at work (2013 Gallop report).  70% of American workers are disengaged?  Really?  We can have one of the greatest economic booms of our time if we figure this out.  Pitifully, around the world that number dips even further down to 13%.  That is criminal!  We need to get to the bottom of what causes the dis-engagement.  A May 2014 NY Times article by Tony Schwartz and Christina Porath entitled “Why you Hate Work” sited 4 core needs to be met  in order to be satisfied and productive.  Physical, through opportunities to regularly renew and recharge at work; emotional, by feeling valued and appreciated for their contributions; mental, when the opportunity to focus in an absorbed way on their most important tasks and define when and where they get their job done; and spiritually, by doing more of what they do best and enjoy most, and by feeling connected to a higher purpose at work.  The article made the connection between engagement and profits!!  Gallop compared the companies in the top quartile for engaged employees with those in the bottom quartile and found those in the top quartile had 22% higher profitability, 10% higher customer ratings, 28% less theft and 48% less safety incidents.  Let’s get on this now!
